What are some must do’s in Japan as a first time traveler?
I’m planning a two week trip to multiple locations: Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, and Hiroshima.
What are some things we should do and if the trip should be done in a specific order?

The peace park/museum when you’re in Hiroshima is probably the single most “must-do” thing in any of those cities.
広島に行くなら、平和記念公園/資料館は絶対に外せない「マスト」な場所だよ。

Two weeks for all those is tight but of course doable.
I’m going to say consider a day trip to Miyajima Island while in Hiroshima. It’s an awesome thing to do aside from the peace park.

広島にいる間に宮島への日帰り旅行も考えてみて。平和記念公園とは別に、宮島も素敵なところだよ。

Walk. Just walking around Japanese cities without any particular aim can be very rewarding.

Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto was our favorite thing of our entire two week trip. We arrived at 6 AM to beat the crowds and suggest you do the same. Same for the Arashiyama bamboo grove, which I also consider a must see. Kyoto was the only place we went where tourist volume was a big issue.
Take the Shinkansen, worth every penny, amazing experience

I’d recommend USJ and Nagashima Spa Land. Avoid Disneyland, it’s too crowded. USJ has single rider queues so you can board faster if solo, and Nagashima spa land is smaller
Also climb mount Fuji, it’s very rewarding. If you do a day climb you won’t need any special gear
Buy or rent a bicycle, a folding one if possible, makes your life a lot easier
Conveyor belt Sushi Yakiniku Day cycle tour around Kyoto Take some time to just walk around these areas and look at shops and bars: Shinjuku, Harajuku, Namba/Dotonbori If Sumo is on then Sumo One of the Tokyo Teamlabs, either one is fine but only both if your particularly into arty stuff If into art also Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hiroshima Peace Park but it is rather depressing Okonomiyaki in both Hiroshima and Osaka so you can decide on which style you like the most. If you like bars and night life, then a night in Shinjuku and Golden Gai Karaoke bars
Don’t stress too much on must do’s, there is more than you can ever get to in 2 weeks, just try and pick you fav things to do and go enjoy them and don’t second guess/doubt yourself, also don’t lock yourself into a strict itinerary as you’ll find something better when out there and wish to spend more time doing that.
If you’re traveling from North America, you’ll probably be jet lagged and waking up super early when you first get to Japan. If you want to take advantage of this, start your trip in Kyoto and get up early to see the super popular tourist-y things before they get crowded! Tokyo has a lot of fun nightlife which will be harder to enjoy if you’re waking up early and not able to stay up late, so it might be better to do Tokyo toward the end of the trip after you’ve adjusted to their time zone.
What if you leave North America late night and arrive in Japan early morning? That’s what I plan to do later this year. I’ll be taking a night flight out of LAX to Tokyo and plan to sleep on the plane, hoping that will help re-adjust me to the time zone in Japan.
We went to Nara in the sort of later part of the afternoon. Yes stuff closes at 5/5:30 but it was almost nicer to walk around the deer with smaller crowds and during sunset. It was super fun!
We loved Hiroshima, definitely recommend just walking around the city, it’s really inspiring. Hiroshima Castle was dope. Also HIGHLY recommend Shukkeien Garden in as well. It was immaculate and just so fun to visit. I also loved Nijo Castle in Kyoto. Totally different vibes and both very very cool. Osaka Castle was a bit much for us after the others so we didn’t go inside but it was fun to walk around the grounds.
Hiroshima-world heritage sites. Miyajima island ferry ride, temple pray (if you’re into culture like that, have fun with the deer on that island. Peace memorial and sayako memorial. Kyoto-golden pavilion-koi fish there are huge (so are the birds in general). I spent a week going through Tokyo (reserve shibuya sky, cat cafes, etc). Tokyo sells out quickly on things like that. I also did teamlab boarderless and planets (love planets better). Hachiko statue, Hachiko and his owner statue (university campus). You can still see statue. Tokyo tower Tokyo Skytree (both have shopping centers inside them) Sunshine city mall-polemon center, free concerts. Osaka-Osaka castle, dotonbori Nara-deer and temples. List is long. Tokyo-Disneyland and DisneySea These are what I did from my two separate trips to Japan ‘23’ and ‘24’ 13 days (booked tour first trip, no time hardly to myself) Second trip got shortened due to flight delay (7 hrs in airport) 7 days. Nakano broadway, Takeshita street, meguro river (Tokyo). I’m working on third trip now. I didn’t get to explore much. Other areas like ashikaga flower park, Kobe, fukuoka-another teamlab exhibit.
I’m venturing hopefully to Hokkaido, Okinawa and fukuoka.
Generally, you’re better off if group travel based on nearby location. Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara are close enough that you can stay at either Kyoto or Osaka and make day trips to the other two places. These three cities are in the middle of traveling between Tokyo and Hiroshima, so it makes sense to visit them in between visiting the other two. Whether you want to stay by visiting Tokyo or Hiroshima is up to you.
